MotoGP is the official name for Grand Prix motorcycle racing, the highest class of motorbike racing. Top teams and riders compete on road circuits worldwide, racing high-powered motorbikes fine-tuned to be as fast as possible.

The very first motorcycle world championship Grand Prix was organised in 1949. Over the years, it has evolved into one of the world’s most exciting motorsports. The sport was rebranded as MotoGP in 2002, replacing the standard 500cc class. In the sport's early years, riders like Giacomo Agostini dominated, while Valentino Rossi became a global icon, winning 9 world titles between 2001 and 2009.

Throughout the MotoGP season, teams compete over 22 Grand Prix races, with specific rules on bike specifications, including weight, engine size and tyres. Depending on the final position at each race, riders, teams, and constructors earn points that rank them in the MotoGP World Championship standings.

What are the MotoGP teams?

This MotoGP season, there are 12 teams competing for the championship. Each team uses a bike that is manufactured by a constructor. Some constructors supply multiple teams. For example, Ducati is the constructor for Ducati Lenovo Team, BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP and Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team.

Honda vs Yamaha is one of MotoGP’s biggest historic rivalries, with races in the 2000s and 2010s often featuring top riders from these two teams. In the 2020s, Ducati has emerged as a top contender, breaking Honda's dominance and signing their top rider, Marc Marquez.

In the 2026 MotoGP season, Marc Marquez, Jorge Martin and Marco Bezzecchi are the top contenders for the Riders’ Championship. Marc Marquez is a 7-time MotoGP winner, with an aggressive riding style that makes him a leading contender in race-winner and championship-winner markets.

Meanwhile, Jorge Martin won the championship in 2024, and Marco Bezzecchi is racing to win his first-ever title. Other riders to watch include Pedro Acosta and Alex Marquez.

Marco Bezzecchi, Marc Marquez, Fabio Di Giannatonio and Francesco Bagnaia are all ones to watch if you’re betting on the outcome of qualifying sessions.

In wet conditions, the track becomes treacherous, and riders' visibility is reduced. In corners, riders also can’t lean as much, and both acceleration and braking are affected. As a result, the betting odds can change significantly depending on the weather. However, some riders excel in wet conditions, including Marc Marquez, Johann Zarco, Jack Miller and Francesco Bagnaia.

Marc Marquez is also a leading sprint race specialist, showing strong performances over shorter distances this season. Jorge Martin has also won several sprint races in 2026, while Pedro Acosta won the opening sprint of the season.

Format and schedule of MotoGP

MotoGP Format

The 2026 MotoGP season has 22 Grand Prix events, and all teams compete in them. Each event takes place over a weekend and includes practice sessions and qualifying.

The first qualifying session determines the grid positions from 13th backwards. The second session decides which rider starts in pole position, along with the remaining leading positions.

In the full race, the first 15 finishers will earn championship points. 1st place takes 25 points, 2nd place 20 points and 3rd place 16.

Every Grand Prix weekend also includes a Sprint race. This is usually half the distance of the full race and awards championship points to the top 9 finishers. Sprint race winners earn 12 points.

Riders’, Teams’ and Constructors’ Championships

Each GP weekend gives riders the chance to earn up to 37 championship points. At the end of the season, the rider with the most points in the MotoGP standings wins the Riders’ Championship.

Teams also earn the total points won by their riders during each GP. The Teams’ Championship is decided at the end of the season by which team has the most points.

For the Constructors’ Championship, the highest-finishing bike from each manufacturer scores constructor points for each race.

MotoGP 2026 season - What to know before you bet

However, it doesn’t necessarily tell you which rider has the best chance of winning an upcoming GP. Consider how the track layout affects bike performance - MotoGP is about much more than just the skill of each rider. Each bike's performance matters, and some bikes suit certain circuits better than others. Pay attention to features such as long straights and technical corners, and look at bike performance on similar circuits earlier in the season.
Qualifying is the biggest indicator of race success - Qualifying sessions have a major impact on race results because they dictate each rider's starting position. Starting far back on the grid is a major disadvantage, because they have to pass multiple riders to get to the front of the pack. Bear this in mind when choosing your bets.
